Season context: Germany competed at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar under Hansi Flick, facing Japan, Spain and Costa Rica in Group E. After a 2-1 defeat to Japan and a 1-1 draw with Spain, they finished with a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica. Four points were not enough to progress, as Spain advanced ahead of Germany on goal difference. Thomas Müller appeared in all three matches at his fourth World Cup, having previously played in the 2010, 2014 and 2018 tournaments. A world champion in 2014, he was one of the experienced members of Germany’s attacking squad.
